Wrap a flexible tape measure around the widest part of your head, about one finger above your eyebrows and ears, keeping it level and comfortably snug. Record the measurement in inches or centimeters, then compare it with the hat brand’s size chart; if you are between sizes, choose the larger size.
Use the Right Measuring Method
The most reliable way to measure for a western hat is with a soft sewing tape. Stand naturally and measure the head where the sweatband will rest, usually about one finger above the eyebrows and just above the ears. This position captures the circumference that determines the hat’s fit without measuring too high or too low.
If you do not have a flexible tape, use a piece of non-stretch string, ribbon, or a strip of paper. Wrap it around your head, mark where the ends meet, and lay it flat against a ruler. Avoid elastic or stretchy material because it can produce a measurement that is smaller than your actual head size.
Keep the Tape Level and Snug
Hold the tape parallel to the floor as it travels around your head. It should touch your head evenly without pressing into your skin. A measurement that is too tight may result in a hat that causes pressure, headaches, or an uncomfortable red mark. A measurement that is too loose can lead to a hat that shifts in the wind or falls forward when you move.
Take the measurement two or three times and use the number that appears most consistently. Measure at the end of the day if possible, since your head can change slightly with normal activity, heat, or hairstyle. If you plan to wear a hat with a substantial hairstyle or head covering, measure with that layer in place.
Do not pull the tape tight to chase a smaller size. A western hat should feel secure but comfortable. If your result falls between sizes, start with the larger size; a hat can usually be adjusted with sizing tape, while a hat that is too small cannot be made comfortably larger.
Convert Your Measurement to Hat Size
Western hat sizing commonly uses a combination of numeric sizes and traditional descriptions such as Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. Numeric sizing often increases in increments of one-eighth or one-quarter, so the exact conversion can vary by manufacturer. As a general guide, a head circumference of approximately 21 1/8 to 21 1/2 inches may correspond to a Small, 21 5/8 to 22 inches to a Medium, and 22 1/8 to 22 1/2 inches to a Large. Always confirm the individual brand’s chart before ordering.
For the most accurate result, write down your measurement in both inches and centimeters. If the hat has a removable or adjustable sweatband, small differences can often be corrected. However, the crown shape, brim, and sweatband construction also affect how a hat feels, so size alone is not the entire fitting process.
Check the Fit When Trying It On
A properly fitted western hat should sit level on your head, with the sweatband making light, even contact around your circumference. It should not pinch at the temples, leave a large gap above the forehead, or slide down over your eyes. Gently shake your head from side to side; the hat should remain in place without needing to be held on.
Remember that felt and straw hats may feel slightly different. Felt can soften and conform with wear, while straw generally keeps its original shape. Try the hat with the hairstyle and clothing you expect to wear, and check that the crown and brim complement your proportions as well as your comfort.
"I measured at home but was between two sizes, so I brought my notes to Jim's. They checked the fit, shaped the hat for me, and helped me choose a size that stays comfortable all day."
