ASTM-rated safety footwear has been tested to performance standards established by ASTM International for workplace protection. Depending on its markings, a boot may protect against impact and compression, electrical hazards, punctures, or other risks, so always match the specific rating to your job requirements.
What ASTM Means
ASTM stands for ASTM International, an organization that develops voluntary technical standards used across many industries. For protective footwear, the most commonly referenced standards are ASTM F2412, which describes testing methods, and ASTM F2413, which establishes performance requirements for protective toe footwear.
When a boot is described as ASTM-rated, it means the finished footwear has been designed and tested to meet applicable requirements for identified hazards. This is different from a general claim that a boot is “tough” or “work-ready.” The ASTM marking gives employers and workers a recognized basis for evaluating protective performance.
Understanding the Markings
The label inside the boot, on the product box, or in the manufacturer's specifications usually identifies the protections provided. Common markings include:
- Impact and compression protection: A protective toe has been tested against falling objects and crushing forces.
- EH: Electrical hazard-resistant footwear is intended to provide a secondary source of protection against accidental contact with electrical circuits under specified conditions.
- PR: Puncture-resistant footwear includes a tested protective device in the sole area to help resist penetration.
- Mt: Metatarsal protection helps guard the upper foot from certain impact and compression hazards.
- SD: Static-dissipative footwear is designed to reduce the buildup of static electricity in suitable work environments.
These features are not automatically included in every ASTM-rated boot. A steel-toe, composite-toe, or alloy-toe boot may meet the required toe standard while offering different levels of electrical, puncture, or static protection. Read the complete label rather than relying only on the toe material.

ASTM Ratings and OSHA Requirements
ASTM standards and OSHA rules are related but not identical. OSHA establishes workplace safety requirements, while ASTM provides testing and performance standards that help define whether footwear offers particular protection. An employer may require footwear meeting a specific ASTM designation based on the hazards present at a jobsite.
For example, construction, utility, warehouse, ranch, and manufacturing work may each involve different combinations of falling-object, puncture, electrical, slip, or chemical risks. Your workplace safety manager or supervisor should identify the required protection. A boot that is appropriate for one job may not satisfy another job's policy.
Choosing ASTM-Rated Western Work Boots
Protective performance is only part of a good work-boot decision. The boot should also fit securely, support your foot, and suit the terrain and weather you encounter. A properly fitted safety toe should allow your toes to move without pressing against the protective cap. The heel should remain controlled, the arch should feel supported, and the outsole should provide appropriate traction.
"I needed an ASTM-rated boot for electrical and outdoor work, but I also wanted a western style I could wear all day. Jim's team explained every marking and helped me find a comfortable fit instead of just pointing me toward the heaviest boot."

Check the Documentation
Before purchasing, inspect the product label and manufacturer's information for the exact standard and hazard designations. Avoid assuming that a boot is compliant because it has a steel toe, a rugged outsole, or a western silhouette. If your work conditions change, review the requirements again. At Jim's Western Wear in San Fernando, our specialists can help you compare safety-toe western boots and identify the features that fit your work and your daily comfort needs.
